| Chinese Walking to Health |
Project Co-ordinator: Jenny Lam |
| Background | Programme |
| This project was aimed at encouraging regular walking within the Chinese community and exploring safe walking environments in the city of Westminster. |
| Objectives: |
- To promote sustainable health and well-being at all ages in the Chinese community in central London.
- To promote the benefits of engaging in regular, moderate physical activity, and how to get the habit started. We hope to help people overcome perceived barriers to physical activity. It facilitates people’s access to various health walk resources available in the community.
- To work in Partnership & with the Local Chinese Community in order to enhance community development. Local volunteers as walk leaders and walk assistants, & other community/health workers who are linked to the partnership will be part of the project.
|
| Back in June 2003, a one day 'Walk Leader Training' was organised in partnership with the Walking the way to Health Initiative. Walk leaders gained skills in leadership, the ability to introduce newcomers to walking, safety measures, and liaising with walk planners and other leaders. |
| First Aid training was also given to walk initiators and walk leaders in order to cope with any emergency situation during the walks. |
| Prior to the walks, leaflets and route guides were given out to walkers. Leaflets outlined the benefits of walking, what to prepare before the walks, and a map of the area with start points. The route guide included nature notes, points of interest and a simple map. |
| Come and join us for the walking to improve your physical, mental and social well being. For further information, please contact Jenny Lam on 020-7534-6547. |
