Health Talk at the Chinese Women & Youth Society (CWAYS) in Portsmouth

We hold a health talk in Portsmouth in association with the Chinese Women and Youth Society. Event on the day included healthy cooking seminar, health talk on back pain, and stretching and strengthening exercise.
 
Community Engagement Project in London
From May-2007 to Dec-2007
We recruited volunteers of the Chinese community to take part in a research project that study the views and experiences of Chinese older people on mental health and mental health services in London.
 
Healthy Cooking Training Seminars in Northern Ireland

Healthy Living Stall at the North Wales Health Fair

The North Wales Health Fair was organised by the Black Environment Network. We setup a healthy living stall on the day and gave health advice, body MOT etc.
 
Mooncake festival celebration with V & A Museum

To celebrate the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, we took some of our members to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
 
Westminster Chinese Community Health Fair

It was held in the Soho Centre of Health. Activities on the day included health talk, tai chi demonstration, health checks, distribution of health information and advice. For more info, please download flyer and programme.

Shrosphire Chinese Community Health Needs Assessment
From Sep-2005 to Apr-2006
We completed the community health assessment in Shrosphire area (West Midlands) back in May. It was commissioned by the Shropshire County Primary Care Trust. The report is now available for download, please click here (file format: PDF, size: 0.42Mb).
 
East Staffordshire Chinese Community Health Needs Assessment

World Aids Day
1-Dec-2003
The World Aids Day campaign was co-organised with the Soho NHS Walk-in Centre. More than 240 AIDS & HIV disease leaflets, red ribbons and condoms were handed out in London China Town to raise awareness. Over 300 people visited our exhibition stall at the Soho NHS Walk-in Centre.
 
Coventry Chinese Health Day

It was held in Coventry Jesus Centre. Activities included health information stalls and health check on cholestrol, blood pressure and sugar level.
 
Leicester First Aids Worksop
26-Oct-2003
We held a one day first aid training workshop for the chinese community in Leicester area. Over 60 parents and children attended the workshop, which have been put together in partnership with the St John Ambulance, Leicester Chinese Community Centre and Wai Yin Chinese Women Society. It was partly funded by the New Opportunity Fund.

Sheffield Chinese Health Day

It was held in St Mary's Community Centre. Activities included health check, health talks, healthy cooking demonstration and smoking cessation stall.
 
Manchester World Mental Health Day
From 6-Oct-2003 to 12-Oct-2003
This event was held in partnership with the Chinese Health Information Centre (CHIC) and Wai Yin Chinese Women Group; funded by the Community Chest Fund. More than 400 people visited our Mental Health Campaign Stall setup up in Manchester.
The event activities were divided into two parts. Part 1 included a 2-days Community Mental Health Training Course. Course seminars include: Understanding Depression, Manic depression, Deliberate self-harm, Anxiety and the use of Psychotic Drug.
Part 2 activities included Creative artwork, Tai Chi, Head massage Demonstration, Chinese calligraphy, and free blood pressure checks.

North London Mid-Autumn Festival Stall

North London Chinese Community Association has invited us to participate in their 3-day Mid-Autumn Festival event taking place at the Oriental City, Colindale. We had set up a stall to promote our Centre, give out free health promotion leaflets and video tapes, and provide free blood glucose check, body mass index check and blood pressure check.
This event was organised by the North London Chinese Association.

Manchester Chinese Health Day

It was held in Yang Sing Restaurant. Activities included health check and health talks on coronary heart disease and healthy diet.
 
Birmingham Health Talk: Positive Life For Elderly Health Talk: Positive Life For Elderly

An one hour health talk held in the Chinese Community Centre - Birmingham. The aim was to raise the awareness of positive living in the elderly.
The content of the talk include retirement life, physical & psychological well being and family relationship & social life.

Basic Counselling Course
21-May-2003
A counselling training course was offered free to the chinese community in the Doncaster area. It was held in the Doncaster Chinese Learning & Resource Centre and taught by Ms Caroline Howard - Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist.
It was run jointly by the Doncaster Chinese Learning & Resource Centre and our centre; and funded by the New Opportunity Fund.

Leeds Chinese Health Day

It was held in Woodhouse Community Centre. Activities included MOT health check and health talks.
 
London First Aids Training
From May-2003 to Jul-2003
This training programme was run jointly by our London centre and St. John Ambulance. It comprised of 6 training sessions, with each session lasting for 2 hours.
It gave participants a chance to learn life-saving skills, which they can use in everyday life - at home, on the road or on holiday. The training began in May 2003, seven participants have passed their assessment on 13 Jul 2003.
 
Birmingham Elderly Health Awareness Day

It was held in Trident Housing Association. Activities included blood pressure test, healthy cooking demonstration, health stalls, etc.
 
North London Chinese Health Day

It was held in Oriental City, Colindale. Activities included health check, medical advice and health talks (topics on coronary heart diseases & mental health fitness).
 
Chinese Health Bus
Sep-2002 & Jan-2001
This project was held twice in China Town, London. A Camden and Islington council's Health Bus was arranged to park in China Town on two Sundays. Free medical check, including blood tests, blood pressure check, smokelyser checks, along with massage was offered to general public. Leaflets covering various health subjects were dispatched as well.
 
Well Man Clinic Pilot

The Centre ran a pilot drop-in clinic for men, offering a general health check-up, urine analysis and referral to a hepatitis B screening/vaccination clinic. It proved so popular that we are in the process of developing a more permanent service.
 
Moon-Cake & Lantern-Making Classes

To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, our centre in conjunction with the V&A Museum ran moon cake and lantern-making classes for adults and children.
 
Health & Social Benefits Advice for Refugees & Homeless
From Jul-2001 to Oct-2003
Since Jul 2001, an advisory service was launched for chinese refugees and homeless people by Chinese Information & Advice Centre (CIAC) and our centre. This service was available every Monday at our London centre.
As CIAC has moved to new premises in Oct 2003, we have discountined our partnership with CIAC. This service is still available at CIAC, address: 104-108 Oxford Street, London W1D 1LP. Contact tel no: 020-7323-1538.
 
London First Aids Training

Physical Activities for Inner City Children

A programme of activities for Chinese children living in the inner city, giving them the opportunity to participate in a physical activity such as swimming, and going on outings. The aim was to improve health and fitness levels amongst children who otherwise may not get the opportunity to do such activities.
 
Drug & Mental Health Conference

Over 70 statutory and community workers attended a conference held in the NHS Soho Centre for Health and Care which addressed the issue of drugs and mental health in the chinese community.
 
Chinese New Year Stalls
2000
As part of the Chinese New Year celebration, we had an information stall set up in London's Chinatown. In addition, caligraphy was sold to the public.
 
Reminiscence Project with the V&A Museum
2000
Chinese elders were invited to view and discuss photographs of old Hong Kong and China. The discussion was filmed and formed part of an exhibition.
 
World Aids Day
From 2000 to 2002
Staff at CNHLC joined forces with the Soho Centre for Health and Care to promote world AIDS Day by giving out free condoms, ribbons and leaflets in Chinese.
